Here comes the next hyped garage band of the year. Louis XIV is a San Diego group that is all about sexed up lyrics and old school rock and roll. In true major label fashion, they make a cash grab by introducing the band with a 5 song EP, Illegal Tender is the culprit. And it proves to do a half decent job demonstrating that Louis XIV is what they say they are. The EP opens up with "Louis XIV" a total throw back to the glam rock days. The move into the single territory with "Finding Out True Love Is Blind". It is the best of the tracks on this EP with a bit of an Iggy sound going on. "Illegal Tender" is just a waste of time. "Marc" has a total T. Rex feel to it making me think that it must be a tribute to Marc Bolan. The lyrics on most of the songs are really just there as placeholders. They might be just there for shock value but even if that's the case, guys, work on them a little more. Louis XIV are just out for a good time. They are good musicians but seem to have a tricky time pulling off some originality.
If this all sounds grand to you, you can just save a few bucks and just buy the full-length album, The Best Little Secrets Are Kept. It has three of the best tracks from this EP. This is glam rock for the new millennium. Unfortunately it's all been done.
