Randy Kaplan is a crafter of decent pop music with a folk side to it. Unfortunately Perfect Gentlemen suffers from being too long. The double disc idea is fine but you have to have songs that are diverse enough to warrant such length and Kaplan just doesn't have that. A succinct 35-40 minute single album would have sufficed. With regards to the music, Randy has a collection of cheap organs and has pulled from them many different rhythm tracks to which he writes his music too. That's about the only unorganic thing about Perfect Gentlemen. Kaplan manages to get personal on many different levels throughout the double album. He jumps off with one of the best tracks on the album, "Rusty & Now". It's interesting to see the way he can overlap the beats almost seamlessly while creating some very impressive songs on top of. Again, the problem is the sheer mass of music here. If he withheld at least half of the music here then you would have more than one of these songs stuck in your head. This is an ambitious effort but in the end it is because of that that Perfect Gentlemen doesn't stick.
