Remeber Godflesh? It's been a while since I checked in with them. Well, if you know anything about metal you would have heard about the dissolution of Godflesh in 2002. But fear not because Justin Broadrick is back with another project and this one cannot be described as anything but awesome. And man, is Jesu heavy! But is it ever listen-able. Well, let me take that back. There is a time and place for Jesu and I happened to find late at night, working, with headphones on to be just that time. It's one of those albums that doesn't get in the way of thinking because of its droney, sludgey sound. It is never grating. In fact, I just ended up listening to it another 1 1/2 times just now while working. If you get more than five minutes into the 9 minute opener "Your Path To Divinity" then things will be OK. By that time Justin has you hooked into his sludge of sound that seems to easily overcome you. The songs actually opens up a little more closer to the end. The second track may sound even more bludgeoning but if you are patient enough you experience the bliss of Broadrick's fairly subdued vocals. And really, the album just gets better and better as you run through it all. Also, the more spins you give it, the deeper into the music you get and the more attached you get. I've only experienced Jesu on headphones but I would be curious as to what sort of hallucinations it might invoke if you were to listen to this within a theatre room. I've been missing out, you have been told.

Great observation, Dennis. This album is perfect as a sort of pleasing backround noise, it wraps around you without commanding too much attention. The sound lies somewhere between the groove-based instrumental elites Isis and Pelican and the repetitive nature of doom-drone. Sludgy as hell and equally melodic underneath it all. Definitely have to check out their newest release after hearing this wonderful piece of music.
