Oh my god! You could pass End Of Love off as the new Weakerthans. Seriously. I haven't checked in with Clem Snide for a while but as evidence on End Of Love their sound has changed quite a bit. I have always associated Eef Barzelay's songwriting with Americana style music but my impression changes slightly here. This is their fifth album and even though the line-up is a little different, the core players remain the same. As for sound, think of a poppier sounding Lambchop and you can get the general idea. There is still a slight twang on a few songs but End of Love is a pop album foremost. I really get a big Weakerthans feel from this album too. It is mostly Eef's voice as opposed to the fairly lush arrangements. The cost of admission is slim when you start to get into Clem Snide's beautifully arranged songs. If you can get over Barzelay's vocals (or if you are a big John K. fan) then you will most likely be swept up with these pop songs. Eef is a good songwriter and Clem Snide is the perfect vehicle for him. It should also be noted that the group gets some assistance from members of Crooked Fingers as well as Lambchop.
