Vetiver is a project between Devendra Banhart, Andy Cabic (Simple Machines), Alissa Anderson and Jim Gaylord. It's a bit of psych folk extravaganza that seems to be one of the fastest growing underground scenes right now. I believe Vetiver was recorded before Devendra Banhart (who only cowrote a couple of the tracks on Vetiver) made a name for himself but if you have heard his solo albums you will have a slight idea of what this will sound like. Cabic takes pretty much all vocal duties in this project but he is just as capable if not more so than the Devendra warble. Even Joanna Newsom and Hope Sandoval (among a few other guests) make appearances on this Vetiver album. I wasn't as big a fan of the Banhart albums but you don't get the quirky vocal style, just the amazing folk style guitar playing. I would think of this more as Andy Cabic's project and he does prove that he is not only a great vocalist but a great songwriter as well. With those two elements along with some beautiful arranging and awesome musicians, Vetiver is the sort of project that creeps up on you and grabs you when you least expect.
