As an early adopter of big beat, I still have a place for acts like Chemical Brothers. I check out every album even though I don't often listen to them repeatedly. Push The Button is the latest album from the Brothers and while it is a pretty decent album. Somehow their big beat style, along with a few others like Prodigy, Crystal Method, The Propellerheads and in some cases Fat Boy Slim (and really, that's about all that made it to the big time), manage to crossover into the mainstream. It was heavy hitting songs like the opening track "Galvanize" (with some cool vocals from Q-Tip) or the thumping beat of "Believe" that accomplished that not easy feat. Now, unlike Come With Us, Push The Button takes a few steps back for Chemical Brothers but adds the element of some pretty decent hooks. For an example of this, look no further than the brilliant "Hold Tight London" featuring the vocals of Beth Orton once again. Other featured vocalist include Bloc Party's Kele Okereke and The Charlatans UK's Tim Burgess. The album holds a bit of a mixed feel this time with nary a second to spare between most tracks. Rowlands and Simons don't stop for anything. "Close Your Eyes" almost sounds like it could be a Flaming Lips or Polyphonic Spree song. It is probably the one really different track on the album. While this album doesn't really bring to much new to the fold, it does prove that the Chemical Brothers have this thing figured out and are still pumping out some interesting music. Songs are catchy and rhythms are bigger than ever. If you didn't like them before, Push The Button won't convince you otherwise.
