KCRW is a California radio station you may have heard about. If not you might feel like popping over to their website and stream a show or two. I do on occasion but what I look forward to is their Sounds Eclectic compilations. This one is cleverly titled "3" and is probably the strongest one to date. This one really features the who's who of alternative music today in a live studio setting within the radio station. The album starts off with The Polyphonic Spree (how the hell did they all fit into the station??) doing "It's The Sun". The Flaming Lips easily follow that up with "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1". Speaking of The Lips, Sam from Iron & Wine fame pulls off a flawless cover of "Waiting For Superman", a track worth the price of admission. The sadly unknown Damien Rice is here as is Brit-vetran Paul Weller. Radiohead do a nice version of "Go To Sleep". One of my favorite tracks is My Morning Jacket's "One Big Holiday". Jem's contribution is a little weak but really not much of a setback. Kinky's Spanish disco "Mirando De Lado" seems out of place on Sounds Eclectic even if it is a really cool track. Also on 3 is Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Sarah McLachlan and Steve Earle. Any alternative compilation that includes Steve Earle is fine with me. Buy this, it's a fun album.
