Slowdive - Catch The Breeze
When the term shoegazer comes up in a music conversation, there is no doubt reference given to Slowdive, one of the micro-genre's originators. When you throw Slowdive up against My Bloody Valentine you actually see what a broad genre this was (and still is to some extent). But I don't even think that Slowdive would have thought themselves any different than some of the other bands in the genre. But here it is, almost a decade after they have called it quits, people still citing the band as a major influence. Catch The Breeze is the first compilation from this influential UK group and it is comprehensive with only 2 discs. Not a hard stretch considering that they only put out three full-length albums, Just For A Day, Souvlaki, and Pygmalion. Catch The Breeze does a great job in compiling these releases in a handy two disc set. This is basically all the Slowdive anyone besides the hardcore fans would need. I rediscovered Slowdive with Catch The Breeze and I would suggest you should too. Let "Melon Yellow" take you away space-tripping. I still can't decide whether I like Neil Halstead or Rachel Goswell's vocals better and I'm not sure if I ever really will. I do know that I prefer their latter, more original work.
