The Evens - The Evens
I had heard some rumblings about Ian MacKaye's new project The Evens but was still surprised when it landed on my desk. It's a project with Ian and Amy Farina from The Warmers. MacKaye plays a baritone guitar (cross between a bass and a guitar) and Amy plays the drums. The vocals are pretty much shared between the two throught out the entire album. You can hear some of the influences of Fugazi and The Warmers in the Evens but for the most part it is quite a unique project. Ian and Amy have a great ability to weave their vocal harmonies together. I've already heard The Evens be referred to as folk-punk which is almost a perfect fit. I don't know if I have heard Ian singing like this before. He can actually sing quite well and Amy just adds to the depth of the music. Some of the tracks get downright funky like "Around The Corner", a song that I just couldn't sit still to. The Evens get really dark on some tracks too. "Minding Ones Business" is a very dark song that comes off bleak but does it ever grab your ear. Then they get all Nirvana on us with "You Won't Feel A Thing". Imagine if the Hank Dogs did a project with Sleater-Kinney, that's a start in the right direction. The Evens have a fresh sound that really isn't that complicated or hard to get into.
