I honestly think that we are experiencing a shoegazing revival. With bands like Joy Zipper leading the way we can't help but enjoy the sounds of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine without quite as many swirly guitars. Apparently there was a bit of a legal battle with Joy Zipper's old label, 13 Amp and it ultimately delayed the release of this album. Hence the splattering of 2003 all over it. The band is made up of the couple Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale from Long Island and American Whip is the duo's second full-length album. If you think of shoegazing and add even more sugary pop into the mix, Joy Zipper would be the result. I love the trading of male/female vocals. I can't believe I'm going to say it but I am about to throw a drugged up Roxette into the comparisons. I do like Tindale's vocals a little more than Cafiso's. They seem to stand out a little more. Now there are a lot of comparisons here but rest assured Joy Zipper comes off sounding very original. It's just the influences are worn directly on their sleeves. Some of the tracks like "Dosed and Became Invisible" are way to full of sacharine. They just come off sounding like Matthew Sweet on vallium, a scary thought indeed. But for the most part, Joy Zipper create a fairly consistent album that is full of some lovely pop tunes that should please the people who stop to take the chance.
