Call Me Lightning is a new trio from Milwaukee and they are a band that I'm really impressed with. This debut is a strong and lively slab of post-punk, maybe not the most original but I've listened to it about 6 times now and see no end in sight for boredom. If Black Eyes followed up their amazing debut with The Trouble We're In they would have been huge. As it is Call Me Lightning will have to do with a smaller but more rabid following. The band claim Minutemen and Birthday Party as influences so you kind of get the idea of what to expect. It really is hard to pick a favorite track off of Trouble but I think either "Ghosts In The Mirror" or maybe the funky "Horseflies" that sounds like early Sparkmarker. There isn't a lot of new concepts with these guys but the fact is, Call Me Lightning take a lot of ideas that have been done and polish them up into something gleaming. So much, in fact, that they've turned me into a fan. Check out the beginning to "Be The Lightning". It sounds like it could even be a Steve Earle song, that is until Nathan Lilley starts in with his maniacal vocals. God, this a good album and the more I listen to it the more I convince myself.
