The Exit is back with a sophomore album and what many may consider an improvement on a somewhat debut. Home For An Island is one of those albums that sounds like your favorite local band that everyone outside of your little community needs to hear. Not that this is a groundbreaking album, instead it is just an album full of really decent songs and musicianship. Some of the tracks here I find that Jeff DaRosa's vocals get a little repetitive but you have to give the Exit credit for doing something completely different. They have a bit of jam band sound but still have a huge punk/indie feel to them as well. There is a slight funk element to some of the tracks as well but I think it is the musical dexterity that makes Home For An Island stand out above a lot of other releases. You could even make a comparison to 311 on choruses like that on "Italy". Otherwise I really feel that they have a similarity to The Northern Pikes with a dose of the Police in there. I think the Police comparison comes from the bands use of reggae type rhythms without actually diving into reggae. Despite a few weak vocal areas, DaRosa really stands up and does his own thing without imitating anyone. One track that really stands out that is worth mentioning is "So Leave Then". It's one of those tracks where you just want to hate it but you are sucked in with the reggae beat and DaRosa's falsetto. It's really a pleasant track. When people are doing things different they most likely won't get noticed. I think The Exit would be a great addition to rock radio but I really doubt that that is going to happen any time soon, but if you are looking for some music that is easily accessible and yet different than mainstream stuff, check out Home For An Island. I think you will be pleased.
