Wet From Birth bring Nebraska's dance-able indie The Faint full on into the electro punk genre. Danse Macabre was almost there but this one dives in head first. They keep the somewhat dark sound that they created on their previous album but only add to it. The Faint have been heralded as the definitive dance punk band but I fail to see it. I don't think there is as much depth and breadth on Wet From Birth as there is on, say !!!'s latest effort. Oh, Wet From Birth is good but it's not the be all and end all in this retro genre. Tracks like "Paranoiattack" really push this Omaha band up to the top of the heap though with a little heavier influence. They follow that up with "Drop Kick The Punks" which really drive the heaviness home. But it really seems like they are more suited for the poppier sounds of album opener "Desperate Guys". One of the best tracks on Wet From Birth is the very pop oriented "Southern Belles In London Sing". While The Faint is starting to get better at what they do, they still need to figure out where to focus. I think this may be the peak for this band though. I saw this album on many various top 2004 albums lists which I think is giving The Faint too much credit. It's good and a nice addition to any alternative rock collection but I think that The Faint will probably be one of those bands that will be long gone in five years.
