Cafe Tacuba is quite possibly Latin America's best kept secret. When I first heard "Chilanga Banda" the first song on the Album I had no idea what the singer was saying but I knew I liked it, the beatnick style use of language worked in with Mexican slang words were all new to me but after this album I was a completely different music fan, I got to see this band at my first show when I was 12 and since then I have truly become a fan. A cover album the band uses the songs to challenge themselves covering some of the biggest artists in Latin America like Juan Luis Guerra with the song "Ojala que Llueva" giving the merengue song a decidedly Mexican sound " mormally this would cause them to be lynched in many Latin American countries but they make the song work for them so well that the cover just feels natural just like the rest of the songs on this album. The songs are a mix of older and newer songs like "No Controles" a cover of the pop group Las Flans where Cafe Tacuba takes a really pleasant and familiar song and goes to town on it putting a hard riff on it but keeping it relatively soft by playing the song on acoustic guitar. "No me conoces" is a greatcover of a ballad a very pleasant listen especially for people anxious to listen to some of the older latin american musical styles from the 40's and 50's. "Alarmala de Tos" is an explosive cover of the Botellita de Jerez song done in a style very typical of the band. Perfidia is a cover of the instrumental by Alberto Dominguez that incorporates electronic beats with the beautiful guitar work for a very interesting sound. Como Te Extraño the last track is quite possibly the best track on the album is a cover of the song by Leo Dan one of the most beautiful songs I have heard enough said. Cafe Tacuba has and continues to be on of the best bands out there and this album of covers really helps demostrate that this band truly understands music.
