I can't help but say that this album is possibly one of the best albums I've ever heard. I hate to generalize like this but if it is listened to by the right kind of person, this album, I swear, will create sparks. I have to assume that only a small faction of people will understand this album to the extent needed to value it. Odd is not nearly a strong enough word to describe it, unlike anything I've ever heard, Max Wood's eccentric music stands alone. Uhhh Sort Of is truly one of a kind.
Uhhh Sort Of was written in response to the sudden death of Max's mother (employee of Sub-Pop records) in 2002. Max, orphaned and stunned, used music as a way of coping with such a large tragedy. Uhhh Sort Of is Max's perception of the situation and his opinions and philosophies, delivered with the same flow which they came to him. Random drumbeats, synthesizers, yelling, harmonicas and telephone rings...though it may sound like Max is raising hell, listening to his music as carefully as he wrote it, you see that it's all a meticulously organized tantrum of sound. Max is an extremely bright 18 year old boy, and while the screaming and banging may give an impression of immaturity; his lyrics are really way beyond his years. This boy is brilliant.
