A long-time veteran of the American free folk scene, multi-instrumentalist Samara Lubelski has collaborated with the likes of Jackie-O Motherfucker, Tower Recordings, and is a key member of New York-based Hall Of Fame.
On The Fleeting Skies, Lubelski's solo debut, the lengthy, improvisatory nature of her past projects is shed and in its place, she delivers a crystalline, meditative psych-folk song cycle.
"Keeper Of Beauty" weaves a quiet bossa nova spell, complete with a multi-tracked flute solo that recalls the shimmering beauty of Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa's Domingo album. "The Boy Who Bought The Cosmos" is pure psych pop, with a brooding intro that trips into a sparkling, sunny verse and chorus.
Shades of the Durriti Column, Stuart Moxham and Flying Nun-style bucolic jangle inform Lubelski's gorgeous songs, many of which feature her playing full string arrangements, keyboards and guitars.
The Fleeting Skies is a rewarding, multi-faceted effort - a melodic and well-arranged fusion of smart indie pop and psych-folk that should be mandatory listening for fans of both genres.
