The former D-Generation bad boy is back with his follow-up to The Fine Art of Self Destruction. Does he flop this time around? Well, I think Jesse Malin played it safe on his debut, leaving room for improvement. And that's just what he takes on with The Heat, a nice improvement on a fairly consistent debut. Where his buddy, Ryan Adams was all over Self Destruction, he opts for production of a different producer here, himself. Malin proves to be a very decent producer and when an album is self-produced you tend to get a little more personal of an album. The Heat has even more ballads on it but nothing that really reaches into the cheese category. I do find it hard to believe that this is the same man who fronted D-Generation but then again, everyone has to grow up at some point. This album seems genuine though. There is an element of honesty here that failed to make it to Self Destruction. Songs even get going at a decent clip like "Arrested". If you were as disappointed as I was with Pete Yorn's sophomore album, look for solace in Malin's Heat. This is a really good singer/songwriter album in the pop/rock vein, a very solid album. And I have a feeling that Jesse is just going to get better over time.
