It has been two years since we have seen a Cub Country album from Jeremy Chatelain. In that time we still haven't seen a new Jets To Brazil album. So with that we might guess that Cub Country is melding itself to Jeremy's full-time band. Who knows? Anyway, Stay Poor/Stay Happy is a fine addition to their debut, High Uinta High. Jeremy has assembled a "full-time band" of Matt Sumrow (bass, keys), Jeff Clarke (guitar, lap steel, vocals) and Justin Ansley (drums) and they are sounding fine on this forlorn album. I found myself thinking of the Pernice Brothers throughout the entire album. And lord knows that there is room enough for bands with harmonies like those guys. Its a hard thing to do but I think even after going through some of the heavier bands he has been in, he has found his own in this Americana band. The songs are beautifully written and performed with so much heart and ambition that one can only stand back and applaud them for their work. I think Cub Country may have had something a little stronger on their debut but this album shows Chatelain and company growing into their own. A bunch of the songs have a pretty decent pop element happening like "Missed The Train". Fans of the first one, pick up Stay Poor/Stay Happy. Those who are curious, start out with Cub Country's debut.
