Rico attempts to follow-up the ill-received Sanctuary Medicines with Violent Silences. He is basically a one man show in the vein of Trent Reznor only not near as creative. He is trying to gain global recognition with this album but I'm not sure if this is the album that will do it for him. The Glasgow based man mixes an electro sound with a bit of a shoegazer sound. It's funny because after hearing hard hitting industrial music, I can't help but feel that Violent Silences is wimpy. There are times when Rico has some catchy ideas but I really feel that he doesn't quite follow through with them. Tricky helps out with "Recommended Dose", a mediocre and a very repetitive song. This comes right before Rico almost pulls off a cover of "Psycho Killer". I think this one could have been even more aggressive, maybe true of the entire album. The interestingly titled "She's My Punk Rock" is probably the most accessible pop track on the album. A note on the production, I can't say anything negative here. This is a well produced album, maybe even too good. But that is such a minor issue compared to the music on here. I think there will be some industrial/electro fans that will really dig Rico but with the potential that he shows here, I think there is a wealth of untapped creativity in there somewhere. Maybe in another five years, Rico will come back with something far superior.
