On one end of the Irish punk spectrum you have the Dropkick Murphys, on the other you have the originators, The Pogues. Somewhere in the middle we have Flogging Molly, not too punk and not too traditional. They seem to have gained a fairly decent following with two decent albums gone by. For Within A Mile Of Home Flogging Molly has kept it's affiliation with Sideonedummy but they seem to have lost a little bit of that punk "Swagger" that was prominent on particularly the first album. For instance, the waltz "Whistles In The Wind" is a real snoozer. There are a couple of these on here. It almost feels like Dave King is moving his band more and more into the traditional Irish side of things. Albeit the traditional side of things and the punk side of things are like a world apart but it really seems that the band is moving closer to the traditional side of things. They still do a fine job of the rowdier side of things with the upbeat "Tomorrow Comes A Day Too Soon" but one can't help but feel that they are holding back a little. "Factory Girls" is a pretty decent track and they managed to get Lucinda Williams to help with vocals. I think my favorite track is "The Wanderlust", it's an upbeat story that clips along at probably the fastest BPM on the album. Yeah, Flogging Molly still manage to mix it up pretty good. I just think that they are getting more and more comfortable with the traditional side of things. Maybe a touch more punk next time and all will be good.
