Client - City
The duo known as Client hasn't been around for that long but have already managed to find themselves on Andy Fletcher's Toast Hawaii label. Not bad for only having put out one album. The premise behind Client is that there are two fairly attractive females that go by Client A and Client B. City is the follow up to their self-titled debut from 2003. City is the first album that I have heard from Client and I am fairly impressed. They tend to rely very heavily on electronic effects but their vocals are pleasant in a pop sort of sense. Neither of the girls have a really great voice, instead opting for a little more of a monotone voice. Their range seems very small. We get guest vocals from the Libertines' Carl Barat on "Pornography", one of the highlights on the album. They border on electroclash without actually diving right in. The sounds comes off more retro than anything. For instance, "Theme" sounds a lot like that 80's song "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" by Boys Don't Cry. Their music is not all that original and yet there is a bit of charm with the girls voices. The arrangements are done nicely but again, I didn't find myself falling all over this album. I think this would appeal to fans of the Pet Shop Boys or other like synth pop.
