Feel the cavities creep in. God, this band couldn't have a more appropriate name. Their music is some of the sweetest power-pop that I have ever heard. It is so poppy that I'm sure that a few people will be turned off. Hell, I'm turned off if I'm not in the right mood. I heard some fan describing Sugarcult as the "Best Hardcore Punk band in the world". Listen dear, you haven't even been exposed to hardcore. You would probably explode if you thought Sugarcult was indeed hardcore. These guys make Blink-182 look heavy. The album opens up strong with a pop track called "She's The Blade" but there are some tracks on the album that make me gag every time. "Back To California" makes these guys out to be complete whiners. It's sad to have some decent rock tracks mixed with this AOR slop. There is a way to make it happen but you have to weigh in the benefits of ballads like this. You turn off way to many potential fans with crap like this. It's unfortunate because a band like Sugarcult has the hooks and melodies to reach mainstream. A catchy track like "Destination Anywhere" doesn't require any thought (most of the album is like this). "What You Say" is probably the heaviest track on the album and I wouldn't be afraid to play this track for my parents. It is just rock and roll via a pop outlet. Once again, Sugarcult have the potential to take a couple tracks from Palm Trees and Power Lines to radio. If you are just getting into the band, I might recommend starting with Start Static. It just seems a little more cohesive as a complete album.
