A new Old 97s album is most often cause for celebration. Drag It Up is no exception to the rule but older fans might be surprised at some of the content here. The album starts out with the familiar Old 97 upbeat shuffle on "Won't Be Home" and that sound is revisited a few times on this album. But it's funny, Drag It Up seems a little uninspired as an album. I know we have high expectations for Old 97's but they should take note of that fact when releasing their albums. Now Rhett Miller's solo album was met with mixed reviews and their last album Satellite Rides was a pretty solid album. It has been about three years since they have been around, they all have been starting up families and as rockers know, it's hard to rock and raise a family. So, on Drag It Up we get a few more heartfelt songs that seem to bring a lot more full-on country elements into the mix. Now call me crazy but I hear both REM as well as Blue Rodeo on the ballad "In The Satellite Rides a Star". It's a gentle track, probably one of the most gentle one's I have heard from the group. I found that Drag It Up may be a more personal album. Songs are a little more rough around the edges. This is an album that will definitely need to be revisited after a dozen listens or so. I think it may grow on me. Fact is, it's not quite what I have come to expect from a band like Old 97s.
