Now this may be strange, but I made it through the 90s without ever hearing Ride. No idea how but I did. Even through working at a record store in the mid to late 90s I never cracked a copy of any of their albums. I was with that way with a lot of the shoegazer type bands. One I did get into was Swervedriver but that's about it. Call me crazy but there are times when you just seem to miss something. So I figured I could use a Ride overview and that's just what I got with Ox4_ The Best Of Ride. Seeing that they had five albums in total out, there was no way I was going to try and go back through all of them. This album was originally released in 2001 but got a repackage with a bonus disc for North American consumption. While some people compared Ride to My Bloody Valentine, it wasn't fair to either band. Kevin Shields of MBV mastered the wall of guitar sound whereas Ride chose to have a more melodic sound come out of their music. Being completely blind to any of their singles, I found a couple tracks that really stood out were "Leave Them All Behind" and the poppier "Like a Daydream". I didn't feel that I had missed out on anything groundbreaking but this Ride compilation fits nice in my rock collection. It has value in an archival purpose. BTW - The bonus disc only really brings 4 unreleased tracks to the mix. Something that might have been a little more suited to a UK release.
