I recently read a comparison between Willy Porter and Leo Kottke. I couldn't think of a better comparison. The bio that accompanied This self-titled release starts out "How does one guy with an acoustic guitar get a standing ovation while opening for Jeff Beck?" It goes on and talks about a similar experience with Paul Simon. How does Willy compare? Well, it's some hot songwriting and some even better musicianship. This album is the logical extension of Falling Forward, his comeback album and first for the Six Degrees label. Willy Porter is definitely not for everyone, but people who spend time closely with music will definitely appreciate his soft, bordering on easy listening sound. The gentle tracks like "Big Yellow Pine" are quiet and easy to digest. He does have moments of rocking out but these are kept to a minimum. Again, Willy Porter's main focus is some great songwriting and awesome guitar playing. This album honestly gets better and better with each repeated listen.
