The Blood Brothers make music designed to give you a headache. And I mean that in the best way possible. Burn, Piano Island, Burn, in all of its spastic glory, was one of the best albums of 2003. Their newest release, Crimes, is every bit as brutal as their albums of the past, but features some quieter moments as well.

The biggest departure is the title track, which surprisingly does not feature one single bloodcurdling scream from either of the dual vocalists. The song is slow and melodic, somewhat reminiscent of the verses of "The Salesman, Denver Max" from Burn, Piano Island, Burn. Don''t worry, though; Crimes is still full of odd time signatures, weird structures, and all-around noise freak-outs. "Trash Flavored Trash" and "Beautiful Horses" are as relentless as anything they've ever done, and it takes a few seconds to figure out what the hell is going on in "Wolf Party" because of the layers of pure noise built into the beginning. The band even takes a political stance this time around, which is mostly evident on "Celebrator" where vocalist Johnny Whitney screams "And every soldier's spewing black cum from their victory hard-on / I want to celebrate!"

Interestingly enough, the most violent and intense tracks are all packed as tightly as possible, usually ending in less than three minutes. The longer, slower tracks happen to be the highlights of the album, such as the keyboard-fueled "Peacock Skeleton With Crooked Feathers" and the nearly poppy "Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck." Certain tracks, mainly "Live At The Apocalypse Cabaret," mix the two styles flawlessly.

As with their previous albums, I can't really be pressed to find any fault in this album. Each song presents something different and unique, yet still fits perfectly into making the album a cohesive whole. Fans of hardcore and spaz-rock will undoubtedly love Crimes, and anyone with an open mind who doesn't mind blasts of skull-shattering noise should certainly check it out as well.

Burn, Piano Island, Burn is still my fave but this is a close second. These young guys are breathing some fresh air into heavy music. Panicked, frenzied, crazy and loud! Great album.

Awesome review! This album is heavy as hell but, like you said, has elements that you would find in a pop/dance song. Very interesting, very unique music.
