Polizida marks the first album for Red Animal War away from the Deep Elm label. The album kicks off strong with a track called "Satellites", a fairly mid-tempo rocker that is strong enough to promise us a decent follow-up to Black Phantom Crusades. The band still has a little bit of that shoegazing sound to them, even though Red Animal War has a little more straight ahead rock going on. Polizida keeps them online with comparisons to Jawbox as well, without quite as much complexity as we saw from the DC band. I'm sure that probably has something to do with the band recording with the infamous J Robbins. It proves to be a good choice because this is probably the best overall sounding album that Red Animal War has issued. It just seems a little more aggressive even being accessible, if that makes any sense. Tracks like "Violet" could easily be added to radio, had those idiots had a fucking brain in their head. The band also has a little in common with Hot Water Music but manage to slow it down a little with "Conscription" and a couple other songs. The band appeals to bands of heavier music but people who get a little scared of the hardcore side of things should be able to dive into this one without much issue. Polizida is an album that you have to listen to a couple times but then again, so was Black Phantom Crusades. I think Red Animal War is up for some well-deserved exposure with this album. It really is too bad they couldn't achieve it with Deep Elm.
