Many Luna fans felt that Romantica was their return to form, but some people, such as myself, feel that they have never really left their form. Luna is an ever evolving beast (maybe a bad choice of words but...) that has really found its own with the addition of sultry bassist Britta Phillips. She seems to have brought out some amazing songwriting in Dean Wareham. Rendezvous is an album that is filled with 11 gentle tracks that exude starry-eyed romance. The album starts out with one of the best Luna tracks every, "Malibu Love Nest". It is a little more upbeat than some of their other material but maintains the gentle vibe that makes Luna so lovely. On "Cindy Tastes of Barbecue" Wareham starts to sound even more true to form. "Astronaut" is the fastest and most rambunctious track we have probably ever heard from Luna. It's fun a fairly fast. Rendezvous marks the first time that Sean Eden has been able to sing on too. He has always co-written a couple of songs on each album but this is his first time singing. One thing I am a bit surprised at is how little we hear the vocal talents of Britta Phillips. Seems like Dean had this planned when he did the album with her last year. Romantica was the start and Rendezvous is the peak of Luna's comeback. It is so good to see and hear a band of this calibre keep their focus and to deliver an album of this standard so late in their career. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more from Luna.
