After putting out a full-length album in 2000, Pleasant Stitch returned in 2002 with a five-song (six if you include the "hidden" track) EP entitled Capacitor. Comparisons to Bjork are inevitable, yet the band still has a certain quiet glow to them that sets them apart from other bands.
Vocalist Sarah-Jane Hill's voice is absolutely gorgeous, and reflects the dark, atmospheric music perfectly. In fact, Pleasant Stitch probably would not be half the band that they are without her. The layers of sound and beautiful textures found in each song are incredibly easy to get lost in, and it's hard to get out of the trance that this EP will put you in while it's playing.
Without hearing the original, it's hard to comment on "Theme," the Rites of Spring cover which starts off this record. With all of the electronics added to the guitar and bass and the spacy keyboards, I doubt it sounds much like the Rites of Spring version, which was released on Dischord records in the early 80s. The strongest track is certainly "Capacitor," yet again due to Hill's amazing vocal performance. Fans of Bjork should definitely check out this record, because the similarity in their singing styles is often hard to believe.
Really, the only problem with Capacitor is that it's too short. It is, of course, an EP, but as a full-length this could have truly been something special. Hopefully it is just serving as a transition piece, though, and we'll see a new album from Pleasant Stitch sometime not too far in the future.
