Salim Nourallah has broken away from his brother (Nourallah Brothers) to record his first solo album. This one is called Polaroid and it is a good title for this collection of songs. The songs are all very gentle but not sad. Salim manages to shy away from the sad side of things. He has a lot in common with other, more depressing songwriters like Damien Jurado or Hayden. Nourallah ends up being quite a bit more sunny like the Josh Rouse-like "Nothing Ever Goes Right". Bad song to pick out to present the happier side of things but you have to hear his music to know what I mean. There are a lot of pop melodies on Polaroid as well as a little lo-fi tendencies. One clever track is "1978" where the song is presented in a mono format sticking in to the right speaker until about 1 and a half minutes in where it smoothly moves to a stereo format. Polaroid is a great introduction to a songwriter and singer that we need to hear more from. Salim Nourallah is a gem that will be found out soon by the underground world. This is an album that many people will be able to associate with and enjoy; very accessible.
