At just under ten minutes, it's hard to form a solid opinion on the Superiority Complex's debut EP, I Can't Explain. The New York based trio offer a collection of four songs that come off sounding much like Elliot Smith if he had used more electric instrumentation. In fact, the similarity between singer Josh Mease's and Smith's vocals and melodies can often be quite distracting while listening to the songs. The opener, "Rewrite the Scene," is an upbeat, slightly jazzy pop tune that's really quite enjoyable. Unlike the other songs on the album, the melody is strong and unique enough that it's easily recognized and remembered. The remainder of the album is enjoyable while it's playing, but leaves no reasons to give repeated listens. Each of the three songs is instantly forgettable, and all of them sound much like each other. It's clear that this is a group of very talented musicians, but they never really get a chance to showcase any of it on this collection of songs. Part of it is due to the fact that none of the songs pass the three minute mark. With a couple minutes added to each one, they could become fully fleshed out, and wouldn't leave the listener's mind as soon as the album was over. As a way to sample their music, checking out I Can't Explain is not a bad idea, but most people should wait until the Superiority Complex puts out a full length album to consider a purchase.
