What the world needs now is another psychedelic folk rock album. Well, that's what Chris Barth, aka Normanoak attempts to bring us. He does so with a bit of mixed results. He looks to some acts of the past for some influence like Love and Syd Barrett, while also taking on influence of Danielson Famile and even Iron & Wine. Normanoak's Born A Black is a bit of a tiresome listen even though it is only 31 minutes in length. It's not that Chris' songwriting is lacking. It is actually quite nice. "Watching Your House Burn" is a great folk tune. I think it may be his vocals that become monotonous in his falsetto-ish voice. I know Normanoak is a new project and this album does show some potential. Born a Black Diamond is an album that one might pull a track or two off for a playlist or to burn a CD.
