As I mentioned in my review of Demure, I had the opportunity to see Enginedown live opening for Sparta earlier this year. It was an awesome show and set me up as a fan of this band. That is always the best way to get turned on to bands and because it is not very often that I get out to see live music these days, when I see a new band that I fall in love with I really miss my weekly jaunts down to the local live music venue. Anyway, a few things have happened since Demure. Enginedown have a new label in the form of Lookout Records, a label that has constantly been impressing me lately. Their sound hasn't really changed much on this eponymous album but it has become a little more refined. If you are not familiar with Engine Down's sound you will be hard pressed to find a tighter rock/metal band. Their sound is thick on here and while some may still lump these talented guys into the "emo" category, their music is so much more intelligent. They remind me slightly of Tool. More the droning almost monotonous sound they are able to create. This album is basically a more refined Demure. If you liked Demure then this one might rub you a little the wrong way with a little too much of the sameness. Me, I love it. Brian MMcTernan canme in to do the production and has done an awesome job. Just listen to the album closer called "Etcetera" for a perfect example of integrating guitar and piano seamlessly. The album also opens really strong with what could easily be a radio single, "Rogue". It has a little bit of Nu-metal sound but different enough to warrant attention. This is the kind of heavy music I like to listen to and I hope to see Engine Down again in a live setting.
