While somehow fitting into the post-rock genre, Windsor For The Derby have been making their brand of slo-core music for a number of years now, nearing a decade. Not a lot of people have really paid attention to their charming music but that never stops them from plugging along. While I don't think it's going to be a chart topper, I think We Fight Till Death does hit some high notes for this group. People should pay attention. The album opens with a lofty 8 minute track entitled "The Melody of a Fallen Tree". The song enters with a gently strummed guitar with a bit of percussion. The song slowly progresses to quite a steady beat that you might hear from a band like Beulah. Then it almost fades into a Cure like abyss. It is my favorite track on the album. Then on "Nightingale" they pull of a King Cobb Steelie style of hypnotic rhythm. I'm reminded somewhat of Pink Floyd on "A Spring Like Sixty", a Pink Floyd had they been an indie band. But then the monotony of the track "For People Unknown" evokes a completely different image. They almost come across as an electronica band that doesn't use electronics. All their instruments are organic but they have the metronomic sound that rarely skips a beat. I haven't personally paid much attention to Windsor For The Derby before but I definitely noticed this album. It is quite diverse but still maintains a cohesiveness. BTW - This is their first album for the eclectic Secretly Canadian. I'll bet there will be more.
