Even though her room-mates aren't in the title of this album, they may as well be. On Carolyn Mark's new album she has a plethora of guests helping her out with probably her most compelling album to date. The Pros and Cons of Collaboration is her third proper album and it is indeed aptly title with all the guests. She has the perfect voice for the style of country that she sings. The album starts out with an ambitious instrumental called "The Overture" that pretty much sums up every style of music that she has ever sung or played. She sings very honestly and her songs portray what goes on in her life. Take the confessional "Vincent Gallo" in which she tells about meeting the man and how Neko Case left "Thank god". Is "Bigger Bed" a Barenaked Ladies cover? Nope, but it sounds like it could be. It's an upbeat, rollicking song that has enough energy to carry her through 3 ballads. "The Wine Song" is quite humorous. "How can you love a man who drinks white wine?" Another interesting track is "Chantal and Leroy", a good folk style track. The Pros and Cons of Collaboration is a step in the right direction for Carolyn Mark.
