Looking for some fine old school hip hop? Look no further than the Motor City's Starving Artist Crew. SAC is made up of 3 MCs (SP, IQ, and Brainstorm) and a talented DJ called Phizyx. They have been performing for a while but had never been in one place long enough to get a full-length completed. Then Up Pops The SAC. This is a lengthy album stretching out over an hour. It does get taxing near the end but that is mainly because the rhythms are so defined. That sounds like a strange complaint but hear me out. Think of the heavy old-school rap beats and then think of today's production. It just ends up being really thick and it would have been a good idea to trim the fat. There are actual times on Up Pops The SAC that there is so much going on that your ears get confused on which to listen. An example is "Grateful Dead". I think its the sample that gets in the way. Just a little bit too much. But taken a bit at a time, Up Pops The SAC is a pretty solid album. The Starving Artists Crew prove to be decent MCs and Phizyx is a strong DJ with some really creative beats happening. The sense of humor is great making the skits actually worthwhile. Check it out.
