I'm not a huge contemporary country fan and I have a soft spot for Dwight Yoakam because he is as much to traditional country as one can get and he has still managed to build a career out of it. He's been putting out albums since his groundbreaking Guitars and Cadillacs and managed to get a pretty decent following along the way. Dwight's Used Records is a compilation that collects any songs that he has done for tribute albums, duets and contributions to other artists albums. One might think that you would get a piecemeal outing but this album holds up surprisingly well and could be one of his best "albums" in a couple years. The album starts off with "Stop The World (And Let Me Off)", a strong way to start out the album. A nice break in the Dwight-fest is the Deana Carter duet "Waiting". What in the world did Dwight do the "Loco Motion" for? Anyway, he pulls it off, somewhat, as a country song. The Byrd's "Wheels" is sadly one of the weakest tracks on the album. It's not awful, just sounds a little uninspired. Another clever turn is his cover of ZZ Top's "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide". The album closes with a couple John Prine tracks, the first being the very impressive "Paradise" that Yoakam treats with respect and dignity. Dwight Yoakam is indeed an acquired taste and somewhere along the line I got that taste and can't get enough.
