You may know Martina Topley-Bird as simply Martine due to a typo on a Tricky album. Yeah, Martina is the girl that gave Tricky all his sauve and smooth sound. The album was originally released as Quixotic but now that Palm Pictures has picked it up it has been re-released as Anything. The album starts out with the title track that could almost be a Portishead track. She gets all R&B on us with "Soul Food" and even though this album is decent, this might be a hint at where Martina needs to look. One song that should be released as a single (or used in a television show) is 'I Still Feel'. It is one of the most upbeat and poppier cuts on the album. And do you think that you wouldn't hear Tricky on a couple tracks, "Illya" and "Ragga", two of the more rambunctious tracks on the album feature Martina's former lover. "Need One" features Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan and comes off as a solid song. Anything is an album that suffers from being a little too late. The sounds are solid and the vocals, it is Martina, are amazing but I can't help but feel that this album should have come out in at least 1997. It comes off dated. But, if you can't get enough of that downtempo sound, circa Maxinquaye, then you should check out Anything. Man, I love Topley-Bird's vocals though. She is sexy and sultry giving all the songs a super sexy appeal.
