The Thievery Corporation is back with a bit of a mix tape for us. It's called The Outernational Sound and as its name implies, it takes music from around the world and Rob Garza and Eric Hilton will be your tour guides. The album starts out with an appropriate track from an artist named David Snell called "International Flight". It gives us a good impression on what to expect throughout the course of the album. It has one of those global lounge vibes to it. As does the second track, "Ya Ma Le" from Gimmicks. The track "Mathar" by Indian Vibes totally sounds like it could be a Cornershop track without vocals. It's actually a little more authentic in its use of Indian instruments but it does have a super funky groove to it. Another track that maintains the funk is "Chez Roger Boite Funk" from Troublemakers. I'm not sure where Thievery Corporation found all this music but it's all fairly obscure. I think for the most part, the guys take the music as it comes. There are only a couple tracks where they actually take it upon themselves to remix into their cool as nails dub sound. The album is quite cohesive in the track selection but it fails in the mix of them. They try to make is seamless but the tracks don't seem to mesh together as nice as they should. Outernational Sound is a little one dimensional too not offering up any surprises. There are some pretty cool tracks on the album that probably wouldn't have seen the light of day other than this compilation though.
