Ming + Fs - Back To One
Ming + FS are almost old school now. They have been around for a number of years, gaining a few more fans with every release but as of yet, still not breaking into the charts. That probably won't change with the release of Back To One. The have been heard in numerous television shows and commercials, and while many may be yelling "Sellout" they haven't changed anything in the process. Their blend of hip-hop, drum and bass, rock, soul, jazz and others (a sound they dubbed junkyard) is very fresh and always pushing boundaries, if boundaries even exist for this duo. Cutting edge TV shows and marketing departments see that and are willing to take a chance with their sound. Songs like "Chester Goes To Town" is just begging to be the background for a cool scene in a Nissan commercial. Back To One is a fusion of the aforementioned Junkyard style and man does it kick. The Album starts out with a primarily instrument scratch-fest called "Fish Eyes". Aaron Albano and Fred Sargolini have found a great rapper in the form of Napoleon Solo and pimp him on an unprecedented 6 tracks. He kicks in on the second song, "Back To One". His strongest performance is a track called "Slang Verbs" in which he "flexes his verve, and he slangs his thang". I found that even though the hip-hop flavors were hot, Ming + FS excel in the instrumental tracks like the space-age drum and bass track "Big Little Jeffrey". Back To One is a hot album that should gain them a few more fans along the way as well as even more remix opportunities.
