It's been a little while since I checked in with Berlin's To Rococo Rot. Hotel Morgen finds the guys doing what I remember them doing a couple years ago. While I did miss out on their highly lauded Amateur View in 1999, Hotel Morgen sounds like one of the coolest electronica acts around right now. Their mix of organic and electric sounds seems so natural on tracks like "Tal". There are times when you can't help fade off into another world ("Portrait Song") and also times when you can't help but bust a move ("Miss You"). Then there are other times when you are held in a trance like state while they finish their song ("Non Song"). They try and incorporate some of the more experimental sides of things while still keeping things listenable. There are times when I think back to the dawn of this type of music but To Rococo Rot tend to meld some of the primal stuff with a lot newer things in order to keep their relevance. I strongly feel that you could do with only one or two of their albums in your collection. They haven't changed all that much since the time I was into them so it might become redundant. Choosing those albums is a bit of a different story because each one will have its own merits. Hotel Morgen is as good as any. Good futuristic lounge music that will have people asking what you are playing.
