I missed out on Animal Collective's debut so I'm catching up with them on Sung Tongs. I found this album one of the hardest reviews that I've had to do in recent years. It's a bit of a crazy collection of almost avant-garde music. I say almost avant-garde because most of the songs do have a theme and if you are lucky you might find a rhythm that works its way in. If you can make it through the 12 minute "Visiting Friends" the you will be just the right audience for Sung Tongs and this duo will land as one of your favorite bands. Otherwise, you may as well just put the album down and look the other way. Some people may find Sung Tongs to be complete nonsense. First time I heard "We Tigers" I was left scratching my head. It did eventually grow on me but that was after about 4-5 listens. The band can throw vocal samples in the middle of a song and make it seem OK. I found one of my favorite track in "Mouth Wooed Her". It's quirky but delightful. There is a genius lurking underneath but we may have to wait for these guys to become mainstream. A long wait indeed. I ended up giving the album 4 stars but that was only after a bunch of frustrating listens before I got into it. Animal Collective is a band that enjoys experimenting and with that you need patience when listening to them. Good luck.
