Flaw - Endangered Species
It's been a while since we have heard anything from Kentucky's Flaw. It was back in 2001 when they dropped Through The Eyes and they have been laying pretty low over the past couple of years. Flaw has opted to keep their sound pretty much the same but refine it. In order to do that they brought in David Bottrill again to see what he had up his sleeve in the production realm. For the most part Endangered Species sounds quite contrived like one of the few ballads on the album, "Decide". They always try to redeem themselves by pounding out a heavy track after the ballad like "Final Cry" following up "Decide". One of Flaws non-flaws is the vocals. Chris Volz is one of the bands high spots. The problem is that there is so much cheese in their music that it's hard to take them seriously. Like on "Not Enough", the album closer, leaves the worst taste in my mouth. It's like they are dropping all their values in hopes of securing a radio hit. You have to believe in what you are doing in order to pull that off. The album opens with the pummeling "Medicate" and unfortunately they can't keep it up. As soon as they find out what they believe in and create some music from their heart instead of what the label is telling them too we will get a complete album from Flaw. In the meantime, I'll rip a couple tracks for my iPod like "Recognize" and "Medicate" and be happy.
