Canadian Sixtoo is a hard cat to nail down. You might say that he's an instrumental hip-hop head but some may argue that this is more of a downtempo beat thing. Let's let them argue and just enjoy this album because it's very enjoyable. Chewing On Glass starts out with "Boxcutter Emporium Pt. 1", the first of three parts. It gives a good overview of what to expect throughout the album with a bit of vocal hip hop thrown in with a DJ Krush style of beats. Then we get into the title track and Sixtoo slows things down quite a bit for the first of many instrumentals. "Sidewinders" brings some funk into the mix with what sounds like live jazz drumming. My favorite track, though, is one called "Old Days Architecture". Take of the awesome beats and you would have an ambient piece capable of only someone like composer Gavin Bryers. Some other tracks like "Chainsaw Buffett" sound like a post-rock band giving their best performance. It's a brief track but fully enjoyable. "Transient Control" is the only track I would have left off the collection. This album sounds great when it's midnight and you are working on reviews (like me right now). Otherwise, it may just sound out of place but we all need some moody night music, don't we?
