Tracks and Fields is the second compilation in a Kill Rock Stars trilogy that started with the 2002 Fields and Streams. Now for sheer mass, Kill Rock Stars gets points. This thing weighs in with a hefty 42 tracks. It's a marathon in itself. Unfortunately there are some tracks that probably should have been left off. Some of the more interesting tracks include one from The King Cobra, Superchunk's "Everyone Gets Crushed", Xiu Xiu's "Clowne Towne (Live)", "Icebound Stream" by Laura Veirs, The Decemberists' "Everything I Try To Do...", and Sahara Hotnights energetic cover of the Ramones' "Rockaway Beach". Other not so notable tracks are "Search and Seizure" by Semiautomatic, the Compilation opener, "I'm Not Like That" by The Legend, "Hegemony Enemy" by Shoplifting and "Make Her Me" by dos. These are all unreleased songs, seen here for the first time. It is amazing that Kill Rock Stars is capable of getting this many artists to contribute. Remember that not all of these bands are associated with the label. It's probably fortunate too. I found myself thinking that if this compilation was restricted to one CD it might have been a little more appealing. The focus here is on the more eclectic indie rock stuff, something you would hear late at night on a University radio station. The trilogy is said to be completed in 2005-6 with a compilation called Roads and Tracks.
