Sounds Like Violence is one of the better Deep Elm bands to hit my desk in a while. Their debut EP The Pistol is heartwrenching and gut wrenching at the same time. How can that be? Well, it's lead singer, Andreas Soderlund that gives you the heart wrench. It's more of a "feel the pain" sort of thing with the way that he howls. The band provides the rest of the powerful mix, making this one of the coolest bands to come out of Sweden in a few years. The EP starts out with the best song, "You Give Me Heartattacks", a song that is never really over the top but it sinks into your sub-conscience very easily. The group is not really emo, per se but they aren't even hardcore. They are more power-pop without the sheen. While Andreas doesn't hit all the notes throughout the album, it doesn't matter because there is so much passion backing him up as his vocal chords warble. The title track is where we start to see a little more of the pop influences creep in. Not enough so that Sounds Like Violence could be considered "accessible" but enough where indie fans will pay attention. This is a great and diverse EP. Like I've done with so many Deep Elm bands, I put them in my collection and forget about them for a while. When I come back, 1-2 years later, they still sound as fresh as ever. That will be Sounds Like Violence, if I can tear it out of my CD player.
