It seems like Matthew Cooper (Eluvium) is getting back to basics. His debut was a quiet album that I quite often resorted to to put my baby asleep to. On An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death, Eluvium has gone one step further or, failed to go to the next step. This album is basically a set of 7 piano movements. According to the sheet that came with the album, this bunch of songs started the same way except they became so beautiful that Matthew couldn't bare changing them and instead recorded them live. In fact, the entire album (an o-so-brief 26 minutes) was recorded in less than two hours using only one microphone and no overdubs (how do you overdub a piano sonata?). What we get is something that could be pretty much compared to some of the greatest neo-classical piano composers of our time. Seriously! This stuff is amazing. Don't come in expecting a soundscape like Lambent Material. No, these songs are even more personal and gentle. The more I listened to Accidental Memory, the more I grew attached to it. It is indeed a masterpiece that classical fans need to experience.

An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death is an absolutely wonderful piece of work. To listen is to engage in an intimate, personal affair between yourself and his tender creations. Each song, though short lived (save for the splendid seven minute long “Well Meaning Professor”) invites you on a somewhat introspective journey of one’s dreams, hopes, desires, a tinge perhaps of misfortune, regret. Who knows, the journey is yours alone, that Cooper himself accompanies you on, which is what makes this album so personal, so delicate and cherished. Indeed one of the greater neo-classical composers today as is shown in this “simple” yet brilliant album.
