If the Arista A&R guy who signed Mr. Cee-Lo Green is scratching his head, wondering why Green is not right behind Outkast in record sales, then I'm scratching right along with him. Cee-lo has some of the funkiest grooves I have ever heard. It's like "Hey Ya" on goofballs. It's like Andre 3000 funked up to 11. People, look over here! This is the shit and I want to be hearing this on hip hop radio. And Green is hot enough that he doesn't need to rely on other big names to sell records. The only other names that you will find on here are Pharrell, Menta Malone, Chazzie, Big Rube, G-Rock, and the only exception would be Ludacriss on "Childz Play". The amazing trumpeter Russell Gunn is caught on a few tracks. He saves the big names for the production duties: the uncompromised Timbaland, The Neptunes, Gangstarr's DJ Premier, Organized Noize, and Jazze Pha. These songs are funky and have so much jazz infusion in them that it's hard not to agree with the Soul Machine statement. "My Kind Of People" is a slow jam like no other. It would get a whole party into a frenzy with its sexy rhythm. One of the most interesting tracks is "Glockapella" in which Cee-lo takes on the mic acapella and then hits into an anger storm but again, Green shows more than his share of mic abilities. "The One" is just begging for radio play. Everybody has stated that His Perfect Imperfections was a good but forgettable album. I thought different but now that I have heard Soul Machine I have a different opinion. Cee-Lo has made a superb album that any hip hop fan should enjoy. He injects some super groovy soul into his music that even non-hip hop fans should get some value out. Still not a perfect album but better than about 80% of the hip-hop out there. Check him out before he's just as big as his Outkast buddies.
