"Are you lonesome tonight?" Well, if you are then you need to curl up with the debut album from The Cansecos. The group is made up of a mere two persons: Bill Halliday and Gareth Jones. The music is very electronic based but it comes off sounding fairly organic despite that. Drum machines are all throughout the album and synthesizers seem like the primary instrument. There are the odd songs that get a little more involved like "This Girl and This Boy", which sounds like a timpani being used. The music gets your head nodding in many places. The vocals are all that inspiring but damn, are they catchy. They sing in a Stephin Merritt sort of voice and then on "What it Was You Said" really reminds me of something Cex would do. They even work on doing a ballad style song called "A Common State Of Being" coming off almost like a Billy Bragg tune with just an acoustic guitar and a little accompaniment along with the cool as nails vocals. The Cansecos have released one of this years little gems. If you see this album, pick it up for something a little different. Especially if you enjoy bleeps along with good songwriting. I swear that I hear something a little different upon each listen.
