What the world needs now is another instrumental DJ act. Actually, I'm a sucker for this type of music. Give me some good beats with some great samples and I'm totally happy. Blockhead has been providing beats for the likes of Aesop Rock and Atmosphere. Now it's time for him to come out on his own and what better label to host some laid back beats like Music By Cavelight than Ninja Tunes. It proves to be a perfect fit for the New Yorker. The intro to his debut provides to be pretty damn funky, even with the kids rocking the mic. Things start to get a little darker on the cleverly titled "You've Got Maelstrom". Blockhead uses samples to expand the depth of the songs, giving them a true identity. Sometimes, he hits on a beat or a track that sounds familiar, but only vaguely. Like on "Carnivores Unite", the beats start out and I felt that it was a track I had heard before, until it dropped out right before the it started picking up. No, Blockhead doesn't do his own scratches. He brought in Omega One to do all those. Nice job too. Music By Cavelight comes with a bonus disc that includes some of the work he has done with Aesop Rock as instrumentals. There is also a video for one of the albums best tracks, "Insomniac Olympics". Stick it in your computer and press play. Blockhead is a great addition to the ranks of the high calibre Ninja Tunes roster.
